Mitchell understands fan frustration after Tranmere defeat

27 December 2022

Jonathan Mitchell understood the frustrations of Rovers supporters after the defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Boxing Day.

Rovers fell to a 3-0 loss at Prenton Park following a disappointing performance in the Sky Bet League Two clash.

Mitchell on how the game played out:

“We haven’t defended the box well enough and we’ve conceded three goals.

“We want more clean sheets. We haven’t had enough this season at all.

“You go into the break 1-0 down and you want a positive start, having full belief that we can turn it around and get a positive result. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.

‘We’ll assess it. Obviously there’s two more games this week and we need to look towards what we can take into those.”

On the reaction of the supporters at full time:

“They were angry and rightly so. We’ve been beaten 3-0 to a team that hasn’t won in their previous ten. We were booed and rightly so. It wasn’t good enough.

“But I think a lot of the fans can see where we’re going, how we’re trying to play and the philosophy we’re trying build. A lot of people are on board with that.

“There is a period of transition, getting used to it, but we know we need to be better than that.

“They’re a great set of fans, they’ll stick back us and hopefully they’ll keep buying into the philosophy and the way we want to play and we’ll get better at that.”

On the belief in the squad that Rovers are heading in a positive direction:

“We’ve all bought into it. We’ve not nailed it yet because there’s too many losses but we’re going to keep going, keep grafting hard every day and look to out things right.

“We can only look forward now. We’re fully bought into it and we come into training every day trying to improve. We want to be the best that we can be.”

On players taking responsibility:

“Players will take responsibility. I wouldn’t shy away from that in this game. I’ve said that it wasn’t good enough from us. We’re the ones on the pitch putting performances in. The staff can only prepare us as much as they can through training.

“It’s up to go out and perform as best as we can and look to solve problems while we’re out on the pitch and almost coach our way through it as the XI. We’ve got to take all the responsibility once the game starts.”
