Keeper Mitchell on the hunt for more clean sheets

28 December 2022

Jonathan Mitchell is frustrated by a lack of clean sheets for Rovers so far this season and is determined to put that right.

Speaking ahead of the clash against Rochdale at the Eco-Power Stadium, goalkeeper Mitchell says there is a collective drive among the squad to raise standards.

Mitchell on delivering a response from the Boxing Day defeat:

“We’ll be having a look at a few things, a lot of things that we can do better and we’ll look to do that on Thursday.

“We’ll look to put everything right. That’s all we can do now. The Tranmere game is gone and there’s games coming thick and fast so we need to start getting results. That’s all we can focus on now.”

On dealing with the workload over the festive period:

“It’s a fine balance but we have trust in all the staff members who look after the Christmas programme. They’re the ones that have the education in all that so they know what they’re doing. We trust in them to get us through the period and I’m sure we’ll be at it in all the games physically.”

On the need for consistency:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a lack of quality in the group. It’s an issue of consistency right now. We haven’t been consistent enough to be at the top end of the table.

“I think it’s the big thing for us. We’ve got a lot of youth in the squad but we’ve also got a lot of experience and we need to do better.

“We’ve shown we’ve got the quality to match and out-perform any team at this level but it’s consistently doing that over 46 games. You can’t have two wins in a row then three losses in a row. It’s not going to get you anywhere.”

On the need for more clean sheets:

“As a goalkeeper, you want clean sheets every week. It’s a massive thing and massively important for challenging.

“I’m frustrated. I know as a defensive unit and as a squad, we want more. I want a lot more.

“We need to get better at it and get better at defending the box.

“We all prepare properly and train well through the week. Whoever is picked to play will be as best prepared as they can be and then it’s up to us to take our chances when we do play.”
