Lead youth Development Phase coach Frank Sinclair felt his team ticked all the boxes in their 2-1 win at Barnsley in the Professional Development League Cup.

Jack Goodman netted his 12th and 13th goals of the 2022/23 season to ensure Rovers finished top of group C, qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition.

He said: “It’s a good win from a game we had to win to be able to progress into the next stage of the competition.

“It was a good performance all around, we focused on the basics of the game this week in training.

“We rolled our sleeves up, battled, came out with the ball more often than not in our duals and we’re scoring goals.

“Goalscoring isn’t a problem for us and we’ve got another two today so we just had to focus on defending our box better and we did that."

The cup victory sees Rovers bounce back from a disappointing defeat at Scunthorpe with a triumph against category two opposition, and Sinclair highlighted what made the difference while paying credit to Rovers’ goal scorer.

He added: “It’s easy to respond because last week would never have happened if our heads were in the right place so that’s what we corrected this week.

“Everything was spot on, on and off the pitch, there was more care in everything we did and the Barnsley result shows what we can do when we do things properly.

“Jack Goodman has been excellent through bad and good spells, however we’re playing he’s got a good knack of scoring goals.

“Jack’s scored another two goals, he’s on fire at the minute and if he can continue to do what he’s been doing, he’s only going to get good things coming to him.”
