The inside track on Newport County

9 December 2022

Rovers are looking to pick up their first win in three league games when they travel to take on Newport County this weekend.

Danny Schofield’s side were beaten 2-0 by Walsall in their previous league outing on December 2.

Here we provide all the details on our latest opponents.

Former Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United defender Graham Coughlan was appointed as Newport manager in October, succeeding James Rowberry in the role.

The 48-year-old started his managerial career with Bristol Rovers in January 2019 after a successful stint in caretaker charge. Having taken over when the team were in 19th place in Sky Bet League One, Coughlan ensured a change of fortunes at the Memorial Ground and left the club in the play-off places just 11 months after his appointment.

He then had a short stint in charge of Mansfield, before spending two years out of management prior to his appointment in South Wales.

Newport have lost just one of their past six league games, stretching back to a 1-0 win over Colchester United on October 22. They rounded off the month with consecutive draws against Mansfield and Northampton Town respectively.

Their only league defeat in that period came at the hands of Stockport County, but they responded a week later by beating Gillingham 2-0 at Rodney Parade. The Exiles’ last league outing saw them score late to beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 on December 2.

Key men

Former Rovers loanee Aaron Lewis joined Newport on a permanent deal in February 2021 after a successful loan spell with the club.

After coming through the ranks at hometown club Swansea City, Lewis’ first taste of EFL experience came when Grant McCann brought him to South Yorkshire midway through the 2018/19 campaign. He played seven times as Rovers reached the Sky Bet League One play-off semi-final, before returning to his parent club.

Lewis joined Lincoln City later that summer on a permanent deal but played just six times for the Imps, leading to an initial loan move to Newport. The 24-year-old has now made more than 70 appearances for the club and established himself as a key member of the first team squad.

Experienced midfielder Scot Bennett has played almost 300 times for Newport since signing for the club in the summer of 2016. After starting his career at Exeter, Bennett spent seven years with the Grecians and played 141 times before moving to Notts County in 2015.

His stay at Meadow Lane was short-lived though and after a loan spell with Newport, he made the move a permanent one shortly after.

The 32-year-old has been instrumental in County firstly staying in the EFL, as well as reaching the play-off final twice under former boss Michael Flynn.

Another familiar face to Rovers fans within the Newport ranks is striker Omar Bogle.

Having made a name for himself with his goalscoring exploits at Grimsby Town, the striker signed for Wigan Athletic for a substantial fee in January 2017. Six months later though and he was on the move again, joining fellow Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City for a seven-figure fee.

His time with the Bluebirds saw him spend a lot of time out on loan, with temporary spells at Peterborough United, Birmingham City and Portsmouth. Bogle joined Rovers in January 2021 after a short stint with Charlton Athletic.

He scored three goals in 28 appearances before joining Hartlepool United in January. His stay at Victoria Park was brief and he signed for Newport in the summer. He has started well since arriving back in South Wales and has nine goals to his name in all competitions so far this season.

Last league meeting

The two sides played out a goalless draw when they last met in Sky Bet League Two back in 2017. Rovers went on to win promotion that season while the Exiles managed to stay in the division on the final day of the league campaign.
