Rovers U18s captain Jak Whiting thinks the youth team can go far in the Professional Development League Cup after qualification to the quarter-finals after Barnsley triumph.

Jack Goodman’s second-half brace made the difference on the score sheet but the defender insists every player played their part in the 2-1 win.

Whiting said: “We’ve definitely shown the response we needed because we’ve dropped too many points over the last few weeks so we had to win against Barnsley to keep the morale high in the camp.

“We played well and looked impressive at stages, there are things we can still work on but I think it was a very good win against a good side.”

The result sees the youth team move into the quarter-finals of the competition and Whiting fancies Rovers' chances of success with the side still competing in two cup competitions.

He added: “I think this team can go all the way, we shouldn’t be marked on the last few results we’ve had because as a group we’re a very strong unit and I don’t think there’s a ceiling for us.

“We shouldn’t fear anyone and we’ll play whoever we get next with confidence and the mentality of why can’t we win the game.

“We’ve got to take the experience of what winning a cup game is like.

“It’s one game of 90 minutes that you don’t get the chance to rectify like you do in the league the week after so you have to win it.

“The boys were really positive against Barnsley, they all bought into the idea that the game had to be won and I think we’ll carry that into the next stages of both cup competitions.”
