Academy manager Tony Cook has paid testament to the quality running through his side following victory over South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.
Rovers U18s put in a strong second half performance to see off the Millers thanks to goals from Jack Goodman and second-half substitute Alex Wolny.
He said: “Having a squad with injuries and suspensions does not bother me, because we’ve got such strength in the Academy. We have U16s coming up, and I look forward to giving them the opportunity to play.
“With the likes of U16 Will Flint in there against Rotherham, he was outstanding and you wouldn’t have noticed the difference in age so I think the depth that we have away from just the scholars makes us lucky.
“We had players on the bench today that we could’ve brought on and would’ve brought on if we didn’t have such a heavy fixture list coming up for them.
“The fact we have the quality running through the Academy is testament to the recruitment and strength of what we’ve got.”
Cook is delighted with the attacking options he has at his disposal as shown through being able to bring Alex Wolny off the bench in the second half to score a brace.
He added: “We’ve got good strikers and good competition for places. Alex was not on the bench for any other reason than rotation and the other players and he knows that.
“We’ve done a lot of work with Alex and all the strikers on how to move in the final third and create chances and we have been a little bit shy on goals across the board, but they’re all desperate to score.
“To get Alex to come in today, and score two off the bench is great for him and we’re so happy for him as coaching staff because he deserves it from the work he’s put in.
“It does show the depth we have that we can bring on a player as good as that to give us a different attacking option.”
Cook’s side will now aim to build on the positive derby win and gain some momentum heading into the final few games of the regular season away at Harrogate Town on Saturday, February 26.
