McSheffrey looking forward to Accrington test

21 February 2022

Gary McSheffrey is looking forward to Rovers’ Sky Bet League One match against Accrington Stanley.

Accrington will visit the Eco-Power Stadium after Rovers’ defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. McSheffrey is keen for his side to respond to that loss with a win against John Coleman’s side.

On the threat of Accrington:

“I am excepting a physical and difficult game against some good footballers. They are old-school and shoot-on-sight with no-nonsense defenders.

“It will be a tough game. A lot of their games are open because they are always going for a win.

“With our games programme, there is always an opportunity around the corner to get a win soon after.

“We are ready for them and have prepared well.”

On Matt Smith’s impressive displays:

“Matt Smith has good energy levels and is brave on the ball. I have challenged him to score more goals and take more chances.

“He has played more or less every game and has continued to get better each game that goes by.

“He helps drive the tempo in games for us.

“His running stats are increasing and has increasing high-distance sprints. He is competing with the real good midfielders in the league and does not look out of place against any of the stronger midfielders in the league.”
