McSheffrey takes responsiblity for defeat

2 February 2022

Gary McSheffrey accepted responsibility following defeat to Rotherham United.

Rovers struggled to contain the table-toppers in a 5-0 defeat at the Eco-Power Stadium on Tuesday.

On taking responsibility:

“I made a poor decision when it came to team selection. I tried to match them, but it did not work. I will take that on the chin.

“It’s a learning curve and I am not going to shirk the responsibility or make excuses. I got it wrong tonight and I will try to rectify that at the weekend against Sunderland.

“We started to get a bit of a foot-hold in the game and became better in possession, but Rotherham ground the game out and took their chances.

“We need to stand up and fight for our lives. That is what I expect when we go to Sunderland.”

On the defeat:

“Myself and the players have learned a lot against Rotherham. We cannot hide.

“Rotherham were clinical with people who have good end product in the final third. Our lads lost their confidence after the third goal went in.

“We need to get back to the performance level we were at in previous games rather than over preparing and trying to nullify the opposition like we did against Rotherham.”

On the impact of Reo Griffiths:

“Reo came on and made a decent impact. He pinned well and held the ball up well. He was physical and looked lively.

“Hopefully he can get up to speed in good time because he looked a threat.

“We have brought eight bodies into an already young squad. This is a long-term project.”
