McSheffrey wants his players to dig deep against Sheffield Wednesday

18 February 2022

Gary McSheffrey is looking forward to Rovers’ South Yorkshire derby against play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday.

Rovers could make it back-to-back wins when they face the Owls after Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory over Lincoln City.

On lessons learnt from Lincoln:

“It was nice that the messages landed. We had a game plan about how organised we were going to be out of possession to stop leaking goals.

“We sacrificed having the ball less on Tuesday night and it paid off. For some games, that won’t work. We felt for Lincoln that work."

On the threat of Wednesday:

“Darren Moore's sides are good at playing through the thirds and makes some nice patterns within his teams.

“That Sheffield Wednesday team can be adaptable. He has two good strikers available at the minute who are fast and physical and mix it up.

“We are going to have to be cautious and ready for what ever they throw at us. They can play out from the back but they have the pace to go direct.”

On finding consistency:

“We are still trying to find the happy medium. The players need to dig deep and turn up every game.

“A lot of our players are young playing in their first professional season. They will grow in self-belief over time.

“Every time we have had a disappointment we have reacted well and bounced back. We just need to iron out our consistency now.”
