REPORT | Rovers 2 Accrington 0

22 February 2022

Goals from Josh Martin and Joseph Olowu saw Rovers cut the gap to safety to four points with a 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley.

Martin - restored to the side in place of Mipo Odubeko - grabbed his first goal for Rovers in the second half before Olowu wrapped up the win late on.

Accrington had the better of the first half chances but few were clear cut for either side.

The visitors produced the game’s first opportunity inside two minutes when Mitch Clark struck a low volley, but it proved to be a simple save for Jonathan Mitchell.

Tommy Leigh volleyed wide for Accrington after a long goal kick was knocked down into his path.

Rovers went closest to taking an early lead through Kyle Knoyle after excellent line-up play between Tommy Rowe and Matt Smith. The latter sent a finely-weighted ball into the path of Knoyle who struck a first time effort narrowly wide.

Joseph Olowu produced a timely block to deny the lively Korede Adedoyin, who continually looked to cut in from the right for Accrington. And from the subsequent corner, Mitchell tipped over the bar with his fingertips after Michael Nottingham acrobatically struck a dipping effort.

Rovers struggled for meaningful possession in the final third but Reo Griffiths brought a bouncing ball under control only to see his shot curl wide.

Accrington looked to deliver early balls into the box and Leigh flicked a Clark cross wide before Harvey Rodgers went close with a header of his own on the half hour mark.

Leigh fired a speculative effort from 25 yards that Mitchell batted down and grasped at the second attempt. And the Rovers keeper was more than equal to a curling strike from Adedoyin.

Rovers had the final chance of the half with Martin cutting in off the left and curling narrowly wide of the far post from the edge of the box.

Rovers started strongly in the second half with Martin denied the opener by a block from Nottingham inside the six yard box.

Olowu got his body in the way of a goalbound effort from Rodgers, which sparked a breakaway for Rovers with Smith finding Martin, who fired over the bar from the edge of the box.

Mitchell produced a good save at his near post after Leigh drilled a shot on the angle. And it needed an intervention from Ben Jackson from the subsequent corner to prevent Adedoyin from turning in from close range.

Rovers finally broke the deadlock on 67 minutes.

After attempts from Griffiths and substitute Mipo Odubeko were blocked on the edge of the box, Martin brought the ball under control and fired a shot which kicked up off an outstretched leg and looped over Accrington keeper Toby Savin and into the back of the net.

Stanley’s Ethan Hamilton picked up the ball in space 20 yards out but Mitchell was more than equal to his driven shot.

Olowu made sure of the win on 87 minutes when he poked home from close range after the ball was played across the face of goal.
