In opposition: Fleetwood Town - ones to watch

7 January 2022

Fleetwood Town’s attacking threat is led by one Gerard Garner who has a team-leading seven goals this campaign.

Behind Garner is form Rovers man Danny Andrew with six goals scored. Harrison Biggins and Callum Morton each have tallied four goals for Fleetwood Town. In all, the combination of Andrew, Biggins, Garner and Morton have registered 45.7% of the Cod Army’s goals for the season.

The defence is anchored by Andrew at left-back. Paddy Lane, another youngster for the squad, is seen as another “player to watch” in the coming years, as he provides the assists for the team with a team-leading seven to go along with one goal scored from his midfield position. Meanwhile, Alex Cairns is the man between the sticks in goal for the Cod Army.

Danny Andrew

Playing as both a defender and at times in the midfield area for Fleetwood Town, Danny Andrew is well-known to Rovers fans for his part in the 2018/2019 play-off push.

This season, he has taken over the captaincy role on the field for the Cod Army. Andrew spent the majority of his youth career in the Peterborough United Academy, later joining Peterborough United as a professional by signing his first contract with the club in 2008.

After making a few loan moves while in the Peterborough system, Andrew joined Cheltenham Town on a permanent move in 2010, following a loan spell with the club earlier that year. He spent three seasons with the club before moves to Gloucester City, Macclesfield Town and later Fleetwood Town.

His first spell with Fleetwood Town started in 2014. He played 16 games for the club before spending the 2016-17 season at Grimsby Town. He arrived at Rovers in 2017, where he played the next two seasons and scored four goals for Rovers in more than 50 appearances for the club. He returned to Fleetwood Town for a second stint in 2019, and he has been with the Cod Army ever since.

This season, Andrew has scored a team second-most six goals and delivered six assists for the Cod Army. He owns a 38.5% shots on target average, while averaging 0.40 goals per shots on target thus far on the season. He is also averaging 0.60 shots per game.

Gerard Garner

Born in Liverpool, Gerard Garner started in the Fleetwood Town Youth Academy, and later signed his first professional contract with the club in 2017.

Playing in the forward position, Garner signed a short-term deal with the Cod Army in September 2020. Before seeing first team action for Fleetwood Town, Garner served loan spells at Southport and Bamber Bridge in 2017, followed by a loan to FC United of Manchester (2018) and Gateshead (2020).

At Gateshead, he scored three goals in eight appearances for the club. Upon his return to Highbury Stadium, Garner would score one goal and assist on two further goals during summer friendlies in 2021. This season at Fleetwood Town, Garner has posted a team-leading seven goals for the Cod Army and providing one assist.

He is averaging a 39% shots on target to go alongside a 2.33 shots per game average. Of his 41 shots this season, 16 of those have come on target. He also owns a 0.38 goals per shots on target average, while maintaining a 0.15 goals per shots average for the season.

Paddy Lane

Another of Fleetwood Town’s young up-and-coming players. Paddy Lane sees most of his playing time as a winger for the Cod Army. His youth career was spent at the Academies of both Blackburn Rovers and Hyde United. He would start his senior career with Hyde United in 2018, later moving on to join Farsley Celtic for two separate loan deals in 2020 and 2021.

He signed for Fleetwood Town in the summer of 2021. Lane made his debut with the club on September 9, coming on as a substitute against Rotherham United. He would score the first goal for the Cod Army on September 25, scoring the equaliser against Cambridge United in the team’s eventual 2-2 draw. As an international player, Lane has played two games and scored a goal for the Northern Ireland U21. This season for Fleetwood Town, Lane has scored one goal and provided a team-high seven assists. Lane has contributed with 32 crosses into the box, as well as collecting nine interceptions and nine tackles won in defence.
