McSheffrey: we have to react better

3 January 2022

Gary McSheffrey spoke to the media following a 4-3 defeat to Morecambe in Sky Bet League One.

Rovers were beaten despite taking a 3-0 half-time lead after goals from Aidan Barlow, Dan Gardner and Joseph Olowu.

On throwing away a comfortable lead:

“I’m a bit shellshocked to be honest, it’s happened to me as a player and it is difficult to deal with.

“The message at half-time was to stop the ball coming towards us but it was a case of poor game management for us.

“We don’t deal with setbacks well enough. We told them not to be surprised if they throw a lot at us but we just didn’t react.”

On the hard work that got his team in front:

“We made good decisions in the first-half and made the first contacts, which gave us the momentum.

“We’re never going to have a better chance to win a game of football, especially away from home.

“We played the right balls at the right time and got on every loose ball, but after half-time that all changed.”

On how he will go about picking the players up:

“There are no hiding places and we have to try and grind through times like these, at the end of the day they have to remember the work put in to go 3-0 up.

“The lads need to remember the feeling of celebrating in front of the fans when our goals went in.”
