Clayton happy with Armthorpe exercise

3 July 2022

Adam Clayton felt Rovers got plenty out of their opening friendly of the summer at Armthorpe Welfare.

Second half goals from George Miller and Jack Goodman saw Rovers through to a 2-0 win at the Marra Falcons Stadium as the pre-season match programme got underway.

Clayton on the performance and result:

“We’ve had two good weeks of pre-season and you always look forward to the first game.

“It’s normally always a local one, trying to get the local people together and I feel it served its purpose.

“The lads got through it, no injuries, so it was a good day.

“In the first half it was quite difficult. The pitch was probably one of the worst I’ve seen for a while in terms of hardness. It’s all part of the experience.

“In the last 20 minutes of the first half I thought we got hold of it better and got used to it more.

“In the second half we managed to get the two goals. A good workout.

“I think more than 1,300 people came so it was definitely worth doing.

“We move on, we’ll get fitter and stronger as we go.

On pre-season so far:

“Everyone has come back in really good shape with good scores on the fitness stuff.

“Now it’s about game time, getting used to playing again and playing with each other again and going from there.

“The atmosphere is really good.

“We know what we’ve got to do this season. There’s no ifs, buts, or maybes. We know what we’re going for.

“We just have to make sure the application, the concentration and workrate is there.”

On the three new additions to the squad:

“I’ve been with George Miller before and he gives you everything he’s got.

“He’s going to try to add the goals to what he’s got. He’s been doing it in training and you saw in this one when he came on, he scored a great header and made no fuss about it.

“Biggo [Harrison Biggins] was the fittest man I’ve seen when he came in last week.

“Luke [Molyneux] has only trained a couple of days but his movement was sharp in an 11v11 we had. He got in three or four times in one v one situations.

“Hopefully he can really crack on.”
