Eyre wants standards maintained in final friendly at FC United of Manchester

22 July 2022

Steve Eyre has implored the Rovers squad to maintain their high standards as they seek to end pre-season unbeaten following Saturday’s trip to FC United of Manchester.

Rovers will visit Broadhurst Park having picked up four wins and a draw during their summer friendly programme so far.

With a week to go until the start of the new Sky Bet League Two campaign, assistant manager Eyre is keen to see the players continue with the positive momentum of the last couple of months.

“We want to win,” he said of this weekend.

“First of all we want to play well, and we really want to do that. We want to keep a clean sheet and that has to be the mindset in every game.

“Then, we want to top our fitness up. We’re pleased with where that is at the moment so it’s probably about retaining that.

“We’ll maybe go through some patterns of play and keep our pre-season, to the end of it, unbeaten.

“That was never a priority. The priority was patterns of play and getting some fitness into the team.

“But while we’re at that point going into the final game of pre-season, going unbeaten is something we’re aiming for too.”

Eyre feels pre-season has presented Rovers with a variety of tests that will stand them in good stead heading into the new campaign.

He said: “Every game has given us a different challenge - whether it be the pitch, a slope, where we’re at with fitness or a committed opposition.

“For us to have large parts of that game against Rotherham with good ball retention, good possession, we were really pleased.

“It gave us an identity where we know we’re good with and without the ball.

“So we’re really pleased with the players.”
