Fletcher delighted with contribution off the bench

U18s right-back Alex Fletcher was delighted after scoring a late winner on the road as Rovers recorded another victory in pre-season under the lights at Club Thorne Colliery.

Heroics were needed at the death of the U18s latest game after Rovers were pegged back from being two goals up through Ethan Harrison seeing Fletcher slot home and Ben Bottomley save from the penalty spot in the final five minutes.

Fletcher featured as a second half substitute replacing first-team right back Charlie Seaman on the hour mark and the second year scholar was pleased to come on and contribute to the goal sheet.

He said: “I think I’ve made a good impact coming on and scoring a goal because I don’t get into those positions to be able to score a lot.

“I’ve taken the chance at 2-2 to put myself in that attacking position and luckily I’ve got on the end of an opportunity and got the winning goal so I’m really pleased.”

The game in Thorne saw Rovers play their sixth and penultimate game of pre-season leaving the fullback feeling his side have had a positive time in their summer programme in preparation for the first game of the league season.

He added: “I think pre-season has been very successful and I think I’ve got some very good minutes under my belt.

“As a team, we’re building relationships on and off the pitch and because of that, we’re getting results.

“We’ve made a really good start to the year and we’re all looking forward to the start of the season.”

With the start of the Youth Alliance League season approaching, Fletcher has set out what he wants to be made of the 2022/23 season.

“We want to be as close to the top of the table as we can possibly be, having individuals stand out and playing as a team to the best of our ability.”
