Rovers U18s striker Jack Goodman is aiming high for the upcoming Youth Alliance League season after netting five times in an afternoon in Newcastle.

The number nine contributed with four goals in a 5-1 win over Partick Thistle and then added another when scoring Rovers’ only goal in a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United despite an impressive team outing.

Goodman struck 18 times last term for what is now Chad Gribble’s side and the frontman felt his seventh goal of pre-season has given him the encouragement needed to improve on his tally heading towards matchday one.

He said: “Having days like this and scoring is going to boost my confidence right up, I’ve been really impressed with myself and by my performances and the five goals.

“Hopefully what I’ve done in pre-season on the back of the amount I scored last year is going to set me up well because I want to break that 20 goal mark this time.”

Despite taking the headlines for the day with his goalscoring, the Rovers talisman wanted to pay credit to his teammates for their performances as well as the service he received.

He added: “There’s some really good quality in our team this year, the defence was solid and the midfield just kept providing chances for me in both games.

“I think we’ve got a really good chance this year of been up at the right end of the table but we’ve got to keep finding wins in pre-season before we get there.

“I feel like we’re on a bit of a run now with the performances we’ve been putting in and hopefully we’ll be able to carry that into the season.”
