McSheffrey proud of Rovers

20 July 2022

Gary McSheffrey says there is still more to come from his side after a 2-2 draw against Rotherham United, as Rovers remain undefeated in pre-season.

Rovers took the game to the Sky Bet Championship side, taking the lead on two occasions before being pegged back by a physical Rotherham side.

He said: “There are lots of positives to take from our game against Rotherham.

“It was a competitive match against a physical and fit team in Rotherham. We stood up to everything they threw at us which I am proud of.

“We took the lead twice, but I am disappointed with the goals we conceded. The first goal we gave away was cheap.

“A couple of chances in the second-half for us meant we could have finished the game off. Once we made a few changes we became a bit disjointed for a bit and Rotherham are good at picking up that weakness and they punished us.”

Rovers’ new number nine George Miller scored both goals for McSheffrey’s side, taking him up to five goals in as many games so far in pre-season.

McSheffrey added: “If George has players around him providing him chances who knows how successful George could be for us.

“It always bodes well for a striker to score goals in pre-season.”

McSheffrey believes there is still more to come from his side after two impressive games against Championship opposition.

He said: “Collectively, we will continue to get better. At the minute we are not entertaining playing out from the back because we feel we have the presence up top to win first contacts and then we have the ball in the oppositions half.

“We are not going to over play if we don’t have to. We have a good balance in the team with youth, experience and culture.”
