McSheffrey emphasises belief ahead of Charlton Athletic clash

25 March 2022

Gary McSheffrey says the focus has been on building belief in his Rovers players in the build up to Saturday’s game with Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One.

The Rovers boss is expecting a tough test as the Addicks visit the Eco-Power Stadium but has backed his squad to cut the gap to safety.

McSheffrey on the approach for Saturday’s game:

“You need to be solid still because clean sheets can get you wins.

“I think we need to focus on what we can do, how we can affect the game and how we can hurt the opposition.

“That has been more of the focus in the last couple of weeks.

“The gap is still the same. There’s 21 points to play for and we’re four points adrift so we keep working hard, keep believing and keep being positive.

“The messages will be the same to the players, getting some belief into them.

“Their training has been really good, good tempo, there’s smiles on faces and a good atmosphere and there’s a good lead up I feel to the game on Saturday.”

On the chase for goals:

“We just need to stick with a couple of players. The shape is the shape and I think it’s decent. It’s just personnel then, delivering the goods.

“As long as they are working hard and training hard, they’ll be selected and be available.

“Whether people get the goals or not, you cannot answer that question. People have to just perform on the day.

“As long as they’re working hard through the week, they’ll be in with a shout.”

On the test Charlton will pose:

“They’re coming in on the back of a couple of wins but anyway they are a good team with good players.

“Johnnie Jackson is a former teammate of mine at Coventry, a good young manager.

“They’re going to be a real threat. They’ve got a good front two who are experienced and know the game. They’ve got good wingers and good midfielders in Lee and Gilbey so they’ve got threats all over the pitch.

“Ultimately, we’ve got ways I feel can hurt them. It’ll be a good game, a tough one.

“We’ve got to approach it with a winning mentality.”
