Muslim women's private gym session grows

16 March 2022

A group of Muslim women who attend a weekly private gym session at Foundation Fitness were invited to watch Rovers against Gillingham in Sky Bet League One.

The course has been running for six months after Club Doncaster Foundation worked with the People Focus Group in setting up the session.

The sessions provide an opportunity for local Muslim women to exercise in a safe environment where they can choose whether they wear their veils without the fear of being judged.

They continue to grow in popularity, with more women each week signing up at the newly refurbished Foundation Fitness gym at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Famila, one of the newest participants, said: “It’s easy to get to, it's clean and it is only women in a closed environment where no one can walk in.

“The staff talk through how to use the equipment and they are always on hand to help if you need.

“There’s plenty of space and it is not crowded so you can just get on with what you want to do.”

The group were invited to watch Rovers take on Gillingham on the day the club highlighted the #HerGameToo movement, which aims to eradicate sexism from football.

Akeela added: “I would like to thank Club Doncaster for letting us use this gym on a Sunday.

“The staff here are amazing and have been so helpful especially when it has come to breaking down those barriers.”
