'Being second best at the basics' cost us at Colchester - Schofield

20 November 2022

Danny Schofield will focus on the importance of the fundamentals as he looks to ensure Rovers bounce back from the disappointing defeat at Colchester United.

The head coach felt his side were second best at the basics as they lost their grip on the game at the JobServe Community Stadium.

With almost a fortnight until the next game, Schofield has an extended period to work with his players and was clear where he felt improvement was needed before the clash with Walsall/

Schofield on how the game played out:

“It was a disappointing day. I think losing 3-0 in any manner is always disappointing. We have to reflect on where it went wrong and I’m quite clear on where we were second best. We’ll watch it back and review it but we weren’t good enough.

“I think it was the fundamentals of football that I speak about all the time - winning the second balls, the contacts, the duels, the physicality that the game demands.

“I thought we were second best all over the pitch and I think all three goals were as a result of us being second best. I know the strikes were of a high quality but in the moments leading up to them, we were fundamentally poor.

“The first ten minutes was scrappy but then I think we really grew into the game and we started to create some chances. We didn’t have a shot on target all game, which is disappointing, but we were creating chances in the first half.

“We had a 25 minute spell. The manner in which we conceded and the timing of it is always tough but I was really positive at half time with the players. I felt the game was there for us but ultimately it wasn’t that way.”

On the dip in performance from the previous week:

“It was way off where we were at Grimsby. The fundamentals I’ve talked about were there against Grimsby.

“If you’re not going to be first at it, you need to be level, you need to be 50-50 and make sure you don’t come out of it worse than the opposition.

“These are the things that we’ll focus on. They are the moments we’ll review with the players.

“It’s a bit of a realisation of where we are. There’s been lots of positives but this was not one of those games.

“We need to reflect, realise where we’re at and realise there is a lot of hard work that needs to be put in from us to get to where we want to be.”

On defensive vulnerability:

“Since I’ve come in we’ve conceded four goals, and three goals in one game is not good enough.

“I build my whole way of playing football on being defensively solid and fundamentally sound which then allows us to play football the way we want to.

“We were second best at that.”

On the extended break between games:

“It’s a bit disappointing for us that we don’t play until December 2. It’s a long period.

“But we need to use this period to our advantage and instil some key points to ensure these performances don’t happen again.

“We’ll be back in first thing on Monday morning and the schedule will be the same as if we had a game on the Saturday.”
