REPORT | Rovers 0 King's Lynn Town 1

5 November 2022

Rovers exited the FA Cup at the first round stage with defeat to King’s Lynn Town.

The National League North side enjoyed much the better of attacking play on a disappointing afternoon for Rovers and were deserving of their triumph.

Danny Schofield made two changes from the side that started the win over Gillingham with Jon Taylor and Bobby Faulkner

The visitors started the brighter and enjoyed plenty of possession in the early stages.

Josh Barrett drew a save from Jonathan Mitchell inside the first minute, with the Rovers keeper dealing with an awkward bounce from the long range effort.

Faulkner extinguished the danger inside the box with a fine block after Jordan Ponticelli found space 15 yards out.

It took a while for Rovers to find any rhythm but it needed a superb sliding challenge from Aaron Jones to prevent Taylor from firing home after being played in with a brilliant through ball from Harrison Biggins.

A superb one-touch move took King’s Lynn into the box from the byline only for Barrett to fire wide from a good position.

The Norfolk outfit continued to enjoy the better of the attacking play and Mitchell was forced into a fine save low at his near post from Cameron Hargreaves.

Barrett fired over the bar from a great position after another great move from King’s Lynn.

Williams produced a superb diving block to prevent a shot from Barrett from finding the corner while Mitchell denied Hargreaves after he robbed the ball outside the area to go clean through.

Rovers’ first real attempt on goal in the game came just after the hour mark when George Miller turned a header on target from a Luke Molyneux cross.

And it marked the start of Rovers enjoying the better of the attacking play.

Kyle Hurst struck the crossbar with a shot from the corner of the box after a marauding run from James Maxwell.

Miller drew a save from King’s Lynn keeper Paul Jones with a low drive after taking possession in the middle of the park.

The visitors took the lead on 83 minutes when substitute Omotayo headed home from a long throw.

Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain almost doubled their lead after a driving run but he fired wide from the edge of the box.

Rovers bombarded the King’s Lynn box in the later stages but struggled for an opening, except from a good chance from substitute Kieran Agard, who fired over from a tight angle.

Rovers: Mitchell, Williams, Faulkner, Long, Knoyle, Biggins (Clayton 57), Close (Agard 86), Maxwell, Hurst (Woltman 82), Taylor (Molyneux 57), Miller. Subs not used: Oram, Flint, Seaman, Whiting, Clayton, Barlow.
