Lead youth Development Phase coach Frank Sinclair is proud of how the U18s bounced back from their FA Youth Cup defeat to Lincoln City with a convincing win against Grimsby Town.

Goals from Owen Scattergood, Will Green and Max Adamson saw Rovers return to winning ways and move within three points of the top of the EFL Youth Alliance League.

The result saw the youth team end a five-game spell without a victory and Sinclair was happy to take his first success since taking on the U18s.

He said: “I think we’ve shown a really good reaction to the disappointment of the Lincoln game after just having enough time to pick ourselves up.

“I’ve asked the lads to play three different formations in a week so they can understand different roles and responsibilities and I think they’ve done really well with that.

“Against Grimsby we’ve shown the performance on the ball that has been missing from our last two games because they’re a physical side that are always going to make a game a battle if you don’t move the ball fast enough.

“We did move it well and the quality in the final third was a lot better than previous games because we got the finishes from the build up play that was full of quality."

Sinclair made a number of changes to the line-up that started the previous game, with Scattergood coming in and making an instant impact getting a goal and assist to his name.

He added: “Scatts [Owen Scattergood] was excellent today because there was disappointment for him in midweek not being able to play a major part in the FA Youth Cup as a second-year player.

“He’s shown a bit of grit this week to get past that and he was ready to put on a performance today in a different role against Grimsby.

“The way we played suited him and Will Green and they showed they’ve got good ability with concentration so they can be successful with what they do for the team.

“Overall, the team performance was really good, we took good care of the ball and we were brave enough to pass out from the back and play through the midfield to build up the attacks so that was really pleasing.”
