Miller: Crewe draw is a great foundation

23 October 2022

George Miller labelled Rovers’ 1-1 draw at Crewe Alexandra ‘a great starting point’ for life under new head coach Danny Schofield.

The squad had only two days to work under Schofield following his appointment on Thursday morning.

But Miller - who scored Rovers’ equaliser after having earlier missed a penalty - felt there were positive signs of the players implementing the new head coach’s ideas during the game.

Miller on how the game played out:

“The gaffer has come in with only two days and given us a plan that he’s put together and I think that was probably one of our best performances.

“We had chance to win it but a point away from home, you can’t complain at that.

“I think in spells of play, we played some good football. Some good transitions when we won the ball back and I think a lot of lads knew what they were doing and had a good idea what others were doing as well.

“It was a good watch.

On his penalty miss:

“I’d say it was a bad pen rather than a good save. He’s done his job and then I’ve fluffed the header so it was a bad 30 seconds but I move on.

“I picked my spot and put it there. I might have over-thought it a bit but it’s just onto the next one and I’ll try to score that.

“It doesn’t really affect me because I’ve stepped up to take it and I know another chance will come, which it did.”

On his goal:

“I’ve got a lot more positive thoughts about that one.

“I told Biggo [Harrison Biggins] that when he gets it to turn and pass It through because they were quite expansive. When they had possession, they were really wide and could struggle to get back in.

“I told Biggo on the half turn to slide us in, which he did. The keeper has come racing out and I’ve just tucked it in nicely.

“Initially I was going to go around in but because he’s committed and gone narrow I just put it around him.

“I think that’s my game and it’s probably the first time this season that I’ve been able to run onto a through ball and go one-on-one with the keeper.

“It was a great pass from Biggo and I’ve finished it off.

On an eventful week at the club:

“It’s been very tough. Chad [Gribble] and Green [Paul Green] came in on Monday and Tuesday and worked us really hard which was good.

“Then the gaffer came in and got loads of information into us and got a plan going.

“It’s been good. That’s the outcome after two days of working with him so god knows what it will be after two weeks.

“It’s a great foundation and a good starting point,. We can only build from that as he gives us more information. Hopefully it’ll be onwards and upwards.”
