Seaman looking to use Papa John's Trophy tie as springboard

11 October 2022

Charlie Seaman is relishing the prospect of further staking his claim for game time with a strong performance in the Papa John’s Trophy tie with Barnsley.

Seaman impressed significantly on starting at Lincoln City the last time out in the competition and is set to be named in the XI for the final group tie with the Reds.

Since then he has appeared in league action and wants to use Tuesday night’s game as a springboard for more outings.

Seaman on the prospect of getting match minutes in the game:

“I’m excited. We’ve done well so far in the group, had a good result at Lincoln a few weeks ago and got the penalties win against Newcastle.

“I’m really looking forward to the game.

“We’ve performed well. We played really well against Lincoln, who are in the same league as Barnsley so we’ll be looking to replicate that result.

“We only need a point but we’re going for three and hopefully a good performance.”

On the positives from the win over Lincoln in the last tie in the competition:

“They’re doing well in League One at the moment. They’ve got a good squad and when they came here in the Carabao Cup they played really well.

“It was good to get the victory and especially in the manner we did. The last 20 minutes of the game with Kyle Knoyle coming on, we changed the game and went really attacking and caused them a lot of problems.

“It was good to come back from a goal down and it built our confidence.”

On kicking on from his start in the Lincoln game:

“It’s been nice to get time on the pitch since and being involved in the squad.

“I had a good game against Lincoln and hopefully I can replicate that in this one.

“It’s been enjoyable being involved.

“Every game is a chance. Whether you’re playing every week or not, every game is important because it could be your last or the chance to play the next ten.

“You’ve just got to perform as best as possible and kick on from there.”

On his versatility on the pitch:

“I’d like to think I can play multiple positions. It’s nice to think the gaffer trusts me to play in those different positions.

“It’s good to show I can do a job in multiple positions. It’s something I’ve always prided myself on.

“As long as I’m playing and getting minutes, that’s all that matters to me.”

On building momentum as a team:

“We picked up a really good point on Saturday against the top of the league. I thought the boys were really good and pushed up the intensity in the second half.

“We’ll be looking to carry that into Tuesday night and follow on from where we left off.”

On coming up against former Rovers loanee Josh Martin:

“I think it’ll be quite fun. I’ve spoken to him quite a lot since he left at the end of the season. We got on really well.

“It’ll be great to see him and I’m looking forward to it.

“He’s a very talented player and he did well here. It’ll be a good challenge to test myself against him.”
