Ben Blythe has been appointed U18s skipper taking over the role from AJ Greaves who has moved to U23s.

Blythe got off to a fantastic start as skipper with his team putting in an impressive display against defending champions Grimsby Town.

The youth team’s season opened with a thrilling game at Cantley Park where the side ran out 4-1 winners after a blistering first 45 minutes saw them lead 3-0 at half time.

Blythe said: “It was a very good start and obviously it makes it even better when you are 3-0 up in the first-half.

“We were a bit sloppy for a bit in the second-half but we got rid of that we could be very strong team this year.”

Blythe has been appointed captain by manager Paul Stancliffe and he is relishing the opportunity of leading the team.

He added: “I did want the armband and I have been aiming for it for a while, so I’m glad that I have got it.

“I’m always helping out and putting my name forward for things regardless of what the task is.”

The next home match for Rovers U18s is on August 17 when they host Rotherham United at Cantley Park.
