Whiteman: we've shown good character

23 August 2019

Ben Whiteman says staying with Rovers was an easy decision following the responsibility put on him by being given the captain’s armband.

The midfielder was subject to interest from the Sky Bet Championship over the summer, but says he and the Rovers board were always consistent with their stance.

He said: “I’ve said it before that there was a price put on my head by the board which I appreciated as that was made clear as soon as the interest came in.

“I was fair about it and understood their decision, it didn’t change the way I went about my business and I was more than happy to stay.

“As a footballer you have to keep things quiet which is difficult, but then in the end everything came out that I was staying.”

After an unbeaten start to the league season, Whiteman feels there is a lot more to come from a Rovers side who have scored two injury time goals in their three games in Sky Bet League One.

He added: “We’ve showed good character in all the games we’ve played and had to come from behind which is not how we want to do it but sometimes that’s the way it is.

“There have been times when we have played some nice stuff but then other times when we have had to show a different side to our game.

“To have scored twice in added on time already shows the belief we have as a group, and that stems from the togetherness in the dressing room to work as hard as we possibly can for each other.”
