McSheffrey looking for a reaction

4 September 2022

Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey is looking for a response from his side after defeat to promotion rivals Mansfield Town.

Stags captain Ollie Clarke opened the scoring with an unstoppable volley before Lee Tomlin leveled things up for Rovers from the penalty spot.

In the second-half, Rovers got off to a good start with Kyle Hurst hitting the post, but George Maris ensured the visitors retook the lead. The game was eventually killed-off after Lucas Akins scored from the penalty spot for Nigel Clough’s side.

McSheffrey said: “Mansfield won the key battles, caused us all sorts of problems, and deserved the win thoroughly.

“We had a good start to the game – probably one of the best starts we have had this season.

“But ultimately, they had more fight than us. It was disappointing not to see the fight from this team that I have seen in the last six games.

“There were moments in the game where we lacked courage.

“Mansfield's game intelligence was good. They came to the Eco-Power Stadium and did to us what we have been doing to other teams.”

The match was Rovers’ first defeat in seven tricky Sky Bet League Two games, so McSheffrey is not getting too down about the result.

He added: “We are not going to get too down about the defeat. If you look at the first block of games this season we have a great points tally in return.

“I want a response and people must come into training next week to work hard to keep their shirt.

“The result is a stinger, but it will motivate us to work harder. The players are disappointed. They know they need to respond to the defeat and react to it.”
