McSheffrey reflects on Barrow defeat

14 September 2022

Gary McSheffrey felt his side were made to pay for a below-par performance at Barrow in Sky Bet League Two.

Rovers were beaten at Holker Street after a goal in each half from Ben Whitfield and Tyrell Warren.

On the performance:

“After the half hour mark we gave the ball away cheaply and were far too open. One header or pass would beat us and we struggled to deal with it.

“We tried to nullify that threat by keeping possession but we were losing the ball in key areas and they were beating us to second balls.

“We looked a bit slow and they had much more pace and energy than us on the counter attack, in the end we’ve been done by five or six faster set of legs.

“You need penetrating runs from the players at the top end of the pitch but we didn’t really have that, we had players dropping deep and it became easy to play against.”

On finding a response:

“We’re disappointed and gutted we didn’t give the fans a result. They’ve been great with us and we have to dust ourselves down ready for the weekend.

“In football you’ve always got another opportunity to redeem yourselves and the players need to make sure that is an opportunity we take.

“If the performance level isn’t up to scratch then there are players waiting and ready to come in, we’ve got a healthy squad with quality on the bench.”
