Since we last met...Colchester United

28 April 2023

Rovers take on Colchester United this Saturday at the Eco-Power Stadium in their final home game of the Sky Bet League Two season.

Danny Schofield’s side will be looking to sign off on home turf on a high before they head to Walsall and round out the season on Bank Holiday Monday.

The last meeting

Rovers returned from Essex empty handed after the return fixture in November as the hosts ran out 3-0 winners thanks to three equally spectacular finishes.

Despite the visitors having much of the better spells during the first half, a stoppage time free kick was floated in by Alex Newby and the U’s went into the break ahead.

Samson Tovide then doubled the lead on the hour mark before Luke Hannant converted in the final minute to take the three points.

Colchester’s recent form

Ben Garner’s side are unbeaten in eight matches as they prepare to head to the Eco-Power Stadium, with three wins from their last four outings.

A 2-2 draw at champions Leyton Orient started a run of four straight draws which also include a 1-1 stalemate at a Stevenage side also chasing automatic promotion.

Back on home soil, the U’s took a dominant 4-0 win over Crewe Alexandra as John Akinde’s brace, accompanied by Noah Chilvers’ and Tovide’s strikes secured the three points.

Chilvers then made it two goals in as many games for the match winner at Salford City before another goalless draw at Crawley Town and, most recently, a 4-1 home triumph over Sutton United.

Key men

Leading the way in the club’s goalscoring charts, Noah Chilvers has nine successes to his name, as well as an assist, to total ten goal contributions this season – the most of anyone at the club.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder graduated from the U’s academy in 2019 and made his first-team debut in March of that year before heading out on loan to Bath City and scoring twice in 21 games.

Chilvers’ real breakthrough though came in the 2020/21 season as he made a clean sweep to win the club’s player of the year, young player of the year and goal of the season.

Veteran-striker John Akinde has also scored some vital goals for The U’s this season tallying five and, with two assists, totalling seven goal contributions in 37 appearances.

The 33-year-old spent a lot of time at the start of his career on the non-league circuit but his stand-out season came in 2016/17, equalling John Marquis’ 26-goals to finish as League Two’s joint-top scorer.

After 87 goals in The Bees’ colours, Akinde enjoyed a title-winning spell at Lincoln City before eventually arriving in Essex in 2022 to score six goals in 46 games so far.

Midfielder Alex Newby has also made his mark in blue and white since arriving in Colchester last summer having scored three times and assisted a further two goals.

The 27-year-old graduated from Barrow’s academy in 2015 but, having only made one appearance, left his boyhood club to join Chorley in 2018 and score 21 times in 88 games.

Another 12 goals in 74 games for Rochdale followed before he made the journey south to pick up the number 19 shirt for The U’s.
