Jones delighted at return to Rovers XI

30 April 2023

Louis Jones was delighted to be back in the starting XI for Rovers - and collect a clean sheet in the process.

Jones started for the first time in the league this season as Rovers triumphed 1-0 over Colchester United.

Jones on the result:

“We’re delighted. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a win and it’s what we work for all week so we’re really happy.

“It’s not gone how we wanted. We were aiming for at least the play-offs at the start of the season. It doesn’t happen and that’s life.”

On how the game played out:

“With the way Colchester play, you know they’re going to have spells of pressure. The ball will be coming into your box and your clearances won’t be going as far as you want probably. But if you weather them and you get the goal, you’re in front.

“There were some really important blocks and the lads made some great tackles. It definitely helps me when the lads are putting their bodies on the line to stop shots.”

On his own performance:

“I’m really happy. It’s my job to make saves so if I can do that then I’ve done my job.”

On his save in the last action of the game:

“It’s one of those. We work all week on scenarios as goalkeepers where you don’t give up, no matter what. If it looks unsaveable, you’ve still got to make the effort. You’ve still got to get across goal and be in the right position to make the save.

“I was there at that time so I’m very happy.”

On starting once again:

“I had surgery ten weeks and four days ago. I’ve been counting! I managed to get through a full week’s training last week and I spoke to the gaffer and he said he wanted to give me a chance.

“Throughout the season, even though I’ve had injuries, I would have had opportunities to play at certain points. I was really happy to get out there.”
