McCann urges players to take Hull heroics into league action

9 August 2023

Grant McCann has challenged his players to carry their efforts from the victory over Hull City in the Carabao Cup into Saturday’s league outing at Newport County.

Rovers were excellent as they saw off Sky Bet Championship opposition to reach the second round of the competition.

And McCann says it is important to back up the impressive win by getting off the mark in the league this weekend.

“It’s what I’ve said to the group,” McCann said. “It was great to win but I would give this win up for three points at Newport. There’s no doubt about that.

“We didn’t go in with that frame of mind, we went to win the game, but the league is our bread and butter. It’s going to take an absolute miracle for us to win this trophy.

“We’d love nothing more than to get the win at Newport on Saturday.”

McCann praised two goal hero George Miller for his performance on the night at the MKM Stadium.

He said: “He was brilliant. I’ve mentioned before that George is playing through the pain barrier for us at the minute.

“It’s great to see him on the pitch and he’ll get goals for us. There’s no doubt about that and so will Joe Ironside. We’re fortunate that we’ve got two really good number nines here and I’m really pleased for George to have got the goals.”

McCann was also full of praise for Rovers’ travelling support, with more than 1,000 in good voice at the MKM Stadium.

“Unbelievable on a Tuesday night. I know it’s only an hour down the road but this is a competition that doesn’t seem to get supported too well until you get through to the later rounds.

“But to see over a thousand fans tonight, singing all game, it just spurred the players on. They’re a credit and we really appreciate their support."
