Actions speak louder than words for McCann

20 August 2023

Grant McCann insists Rovers cannot continue to point to the fact there are plenty of games to come this season and must end the ‘poor’ start to the campaign.

Rovers fell to a 3-1 defeat to Notts County on Saturday and continue to look for a first league win of the campaign.

McCann believes his squad has plenty of time to turn things around and achieve the goals set out for the season - but actions will speak louder than words.

“There’s a lot of questions for me and my staff to speak about before Monday,” he said. “There’s a long way to go this season - we can’t keep saying this though.

“It’s been a poor start for us and we’ve given our fans absolutely nothing to cheer about at home in the three games we’ve had.

“This is another really disappointing day for us.

“We’re still working to try to find the right blend. It’s tough at the minute with the amount of injuries we’ve got and not being able to move people in and out.

“I’ve never been about excuses. In this one we just didn’t get to them enough.

“In the first half they had one opportunity and scored from it. We had three opportunities and nothing came off it. That’s so frustrating and we need more in those moments. When games are tight you need to show better quality and need to finish or something comes from it.”

McCann was disappointed with the overall workrate of his team against the Magpies, particularly off the ball.

And he is determined to discover the reasons behind the issue.

He said: “It’s a work in progress for us and we need to understand why people aren’t getting to the ball or why they’re not sprinting or the energy isn’t there. Is it something we’re doing in training?

“There’s a lot of things we need to discuss, myself and the staff, to make sure we get it right for the games coming up.”
