McCann: We will be brave against Everton

30 August 2023

Grant McCann insists Rovers will be brave in the face of the challenge posed by Premier League side Everton in the Carabao Cup.

Rovers host the Toffees on Wednesday night in the second round tie and McCann says the intent for his side is to take the game to opposition as he seeks to build on the positive performance from the weekend at MK Dons.

“We will be brave and we will be on the front foot,” McCann said. “We’re not coming into this to sit back and let them dictate the game. We want to be on the front foot.

“This is our home and we want to make it a real cup tie. That’s the way we want to make it.

“It’s not going to be easy but whoever we play against, we want to be on the front foot.

“Slowly but surely we’re getting there and I’m sure you’ll see the fruits of that in the coming months.”

There will be a bumper crowd at the Eco-Power Stadium for the fixture and McCann expects it to be a memorable occasion for the club as a whole.

“It’s a great game,” he said. “We’re playing against a Premier League team with star international players running all through it.

“It’s a great game for the whole of Doncaster and the chance for us to test ourselves against Premier League players and test ourselves against elite level managers and coaches.

“We’re looking forward to it.

“I’ve mentioned before that our fans are really important to us and so important to everything that we do.

“They’ve been class since I came back. Hopefully they can stay like that.

“Obviously we want to put more positive results together for them so we can give them something to cheer about but we know that will come.

“We have a really strong belief in how we work and what we have in the changing room.

“I think luck will change for us as well. We’re really close on bringing four or five players back which is a massive boost for everyone. It’s not just having those players back, it’s the competition it brings as well, which I think keeps people on their toes.

“It’s a great game for us. The stadium will be buzzing with 11 or 12 thousand in, which is great for us.”
