McCann delighted with receptiveness of Rovers squad

Grant McCann admits he has been impressed by the desire to improve shown by his Rovers players since the start of pre-season.

The Rovers boss has made no secret of the need for improvement within the group following the start of the campaign but believes he has a squad that is very receptive when it comes to their individual development.

“I like the group, it’s a real honest group that works hard every day,” he said. “As a manager - and Cliff will tell you, as well Glove and Copps - when you’re go on the training ground every day and you’re having to motivate people to train, we don’t have that.

“It’s a group that works hard and wants to improve and get better. That’s the pleasing thing about this group.

“There’s a lot of young players in the group who want to, for their own personal development, want to improve and get better.

“I had a good chat with Joseph Olowu because he’s one I can see where his ceiling in very high. He has all the attributes to be a top, top centre half. There are areas of his game where I think I can help him.

“We’ve got a group that wants to take this information on board and do something about it, which is really good.

“They remind me of the group we had at Hull. They’re an honest group of players, no superstars but an honest group that will run and work and fight. I can see that coming back out of them now.

“It’s down to us, myself and Cliff and the players, to get us playing how we want to play moving forward.

“I think we’ve seen bits of us in certain elements of games but bits of us where everyone can see we need to improve.”

Rovers welcome Notts County to the Eco-Power Stadium on Saturday, looking for their first win of the campaign.

And McCann is expecting a tough afternoon against the League Two newcomers.

He said: “We’re playing against a very possession-based team.

“Luke Williams has done really well with them. I was on a pro licence course with him many years ago so I know he’s a good coach and his team plays good football.

“It’s going to be a football game for sure and that’s something we have shown we can play against, those type of teams that want to dominate the ball. We have to get our energy and our press right.

“I think it’ll be an entertaining game with two teams going for it. They’ll not be coming here to sit back and we won’t be sitting back and watching them play around with the ball. That’s not what I’m about so I think it’ll be a good game.”
