Responsibility falls to the players to get back on track insists Anderson

5 February 2023

Tom Anderson insists the responsibility falls to the Rovers squad to deliver on the pitch and bring about a return to positive results.

Rovers suffered a third consecutive defeat as they fell to a late goal for a 1-0 defeat to Hartlepool United on Saturday.

And captain Anderson says they need to deliver more ruthlessness in the final third.

On how the game played out:

“It was very disappointing. It’s never nice to lose a game but in the last minute, when we’ve been pretty solid throughout, it’s tough to take.

“That’s football, it happens and we’ve got a game on Tuesday that we have to prepare for.

“I think we had a lot of the ball but in the last third maybe didn’t create enough. But we certainly didn’t deserve to lose the game.

“We got in good positions to cause them problems and the build-up play was good. We’ve just got to get more ruthless in the final third.

“I never really felt any pressure at any time in the game. They had a gameplay and it was obvious that whenever we got higher up the pitch, they stuck in and were quite deep. You have to give them credit but that is where we need to create more chances and take them.

“It’s not just down to the strikers and the forwards. At corners and when us centre halves go up, we need to make sure we’re contributing goals too.

“We’re a team - we win as a team and we lose as a team.”

On his words to the squad after the game as captain:

“We just have to keep going and keep working. You can’t feel sorry for yourself. It’s three losses on the bounce and it’s only us as players that can get us out of this.

“The staff and management can only give you so much and they are doing. But it’s down to us as players to take responsibility, go out there and perform and get the result. That’s what we need to do.

“We’ve got a good group of lads here and we know what we can do. We are showing it in performances but we need to turn performances into results.”

On James Brown’s full debut:

“I think he’s a good athlete that can get up and down well.

“We play a bit differently to how Stockport do so it might take him a bit of time to get used to that. But he’s a good lad who works hard and it’s good to have him on board.”
