REPORT | Rovers 1 Barrow AFC 0

14 February 2023

James Maxwell’s first half strike saw Rovers on the way to a third straight victory as they downed Barrow.

The goal was enough to decide a tight affair in which Rovers posed the greater threat in the first half before showing excellent resolve after the break for a third straight clean sheet.

Danny Schofield made one enforced change to the side that started the win at Swindon Town four days earlier as Tom Anderson missed out with a minor complaint and Tommy Rowe replaced him in the back three.

Rovers enjoyed the brighter start to the game as they moved the ball quickly in a bid to break down unpick the Barrow defence, who were inviting them on.

James Brown almost saw a driven cross fly straight inside the first few seconds but the ball landed on the roof of the net. And George Miller headed narrowly wide from a Charlie Lakin free kick - though he would have been denied by the offside flag.

The positive start was capped on 18 minutes when Rovers took the lead. The most crisp piece of build-up play to that point saw the ball carried quickly out of the Rovers half and to the edge of the Barrow box. James Brown lofted a ball to the back post where Maxwell saw his initial header blocked by the back of his marker, only to slot in at the second attempt.

Luke Molyneux was inches away from doubling the advantage on the half hour mark. He collected a half-cleared corner 25 yards out and smashed a shot which grazed the crossbar.

Fresh from his brace at Swindon, Molyneux was clearly brimming with confidence and almost closed the half with a goal. He surged in off the right, jinking past a couple of challenges and drilled a low shot to the near post only to see Barrow keeper Paul Farman save.

Barrow emerged aggressively for the second half and enjoyed the majority of the ball in the early stages without creating a clear chance of note.

They tested Jonathan Mitchell for the first time on the hour mark, when Billy Waters fired a low effort that was denied at the near post.

Molyneux raced back alongside Joseph Olowu with the pair superbly denying a clear shooting opportunity for Ged Garner after a rapid break from the visitors.

Brown sent in a cross that was begging to be struck on 70 minutes and Miller obliged, hooking a volley on goal that Farman held.

Garner tested Mitchell’s reactions at the other end moments later but the Rovers keeper was equal to his shot.

Hurst looked to catch out Farman with a powerful effort from the edge of the box but the Barrow keeper held the shot well.

Barrow pushed for the leveller deep into stoppage time but Rovers held firm with some brave defending to secure the win.
