REPORT | Rovers 0 Bradford City 1

25 February 2023

Rovers fell to a defeat against fellow top seven challengers Bradford City in a tight game the Eco-Power Stadium.

Andy Cook’s second half header was all that separated the two sides in a cagey affair.

Danny Schofield made two changes to the side that started the game at Sutton with Harrison Biggins and Tom Anderson returning to the side.

Jonathan Mitchell was called into action early for Rovers. After palming away a shot from Jamie Walker, he recovered to hook the ball away from Dara Costelloe who was waiting to pounce at the back post.

The visitors had the better of the early play, forcing Rovers back into their own half for long periods.

Chances for Rovers were scarce in the period, and the closest they came to breaking the deadlock came when Biggins fired wide from his own half after spotting Harry Lewis off his line.

For all their possession, Bradford also struggled for clear opportunities. Walker curled a shot well wide from the corner of the box after running onto a loose ball.

Rovers grew into the game as the half wore on and Lewis was forced to tip over the bar after a scuffed defensive header from Sam Stubbs threatened to loop into the top corner.

Bradford striker Andy Cook struck a first time effort wide after latching onto a ball over the top.

James Brown drew a save from Lewis as the first half drew to a close, cutting inside and drilling a low effort to the near post.

Rovers emerged strongly for the second half and forced an early opportunity. Charlie Lakin got behind the back line and cut the ball back for Kyle Hurst who could not quite arrive on time to make his poked effort count.

Tommy Rowe drew a save from Lewis as he nipped in at the back post with a header from a tight angle.

Bradford slowly began to look the greater threat again. Mitchell got down well to keep out a low effort from Richie Smallwood and produced an excellent reaction stop to claw a Cook header off his line.

And the visitors took the lead on 71 minutes when Cook headed home from a corner.

Bradford had the better of the opportunities in the later stages. Tom Anderson headed off the line as Smallwood chipped the ball over Mitchell.
