Molyneux says scoring his first Rovers goals has lifted a weight off his shoulders

12 February 2023

Luke Molyneux says a weight has been lifted off his shoulders after he netted his first two goals for Rovers in the win at Swindon Town.

The winger has been made to wait to get off the mark for the club and admitted he felt the pressure growing as his search for a first goal wore on.

After netting both goals in the 2-0 triumph at the County Ground, Molyneux spoke of his gratitude to team mates and coaching staff alike for supporting him through his early months at the club.

On how the game played out:

“It was a massive three points against a team that is around us in the league and it was good to get another win on the table after Tuesday’s performance. The goals for me were a bonus.

“We’ve more been looking at the performances. Even with the losses, we got at teams and stuck to what we were doing. In the last two games we’ve got what we’ve deserved and I think that will just push us on now to get in those play-off spots.

“We were solid in all areas and I felt like we defended really well. They couldn’t really break us down and they just stuck to passing it around at the back. We were good on the counterattack and we created a lot of chances.”

On scoring his first goals for the club:

“It was good just to see it hit the back of the net. It’s been a tough season individually and it was a good feeling to get the goal.

“There’s been a lot of pressure on me. No one has put pressure on me other than myself. The lads have been spot on, and the coaching staff as well and no one has put pressure on me. But after last season, scoring a lot of goals, coming to a new club you just want to get the goals. They’ve not been coming but thankfully they finally have. It’s a weight off my shoulders.

“I just want to get back out there. I’m looking forward to Tuesday.”

On the importance of clean sheets:

“We always say that if we don’t concede then we don’t lose the game. It’s massive and the goals will come. We’ve got plenty of quality in the team and we can score plenty of goals all over the pitch.”

On the impact of the January additions:

“We’ve got a good squad. We’ve had a good squad all season and everyone has been working together so well. The new lads have fit straight in and you can see that on the pitch.”
