Nelson loving life with Rovers

14 February 2023

Ben Nelson is loving life at Rovers and is determined to show he belongs at senior level.

The on loan Leicester City defender has made a strong start to life at the club with a string of assured performances under his belt already.

And he is looking to make every moment count at Rovers.

On his first few weeks at the club:

“I’ve really enjoyed the first couple of weeks that I’ve been here. The lads are all brilliant and they’ve taken to me into their group. I’ve really enjoyed it on and off the pitch where I’ve started to show what I can do.

“I had six months at Rochdale prior to this which gave me an insight into what it’s like in men’s football. From that, I’ve grown and that experience has helped me take this one in my stride.

“Going from Academy football to that dropped me right in the deep end. I had to work through that and I think it’ll help me out in my career.

“I want to make this a really good experience for me and one that will push me up.

On life in League Two:

“Every game in this league is tough. Teams have different shapes and approaches and they’re adaptable so you always have to be on your toes for whatever you come up against.

“I always knew what I was going to be up against. You know it’s going to be different coming out of U23 football and I felt I was mentally and physically prepared for that.”

On his own game:

“I’m strong and tall. I feel like I can win aerial duels. And on the ground, passing coming through Academy football it’s more possession based and I feel like It’s allowed me to bring what I want managers wanted from me into this team.”

On his experience of being around Leicester’s European squads:

“It’s a great thing that you can do, being around the first team squad, coming in from the Academy - training, being part of pre-season games, the Europa League.

“That was a big one - going to Ukraine with the atmosphere in such a big competition. It’s helped me, seeing that and striving to be a part of that. It pushes me always.

“It was very different to what I’ve been used to when we went to Napoli. It was an eye-opener to the top level and what it looks like.”

On working under Danny Schofield:

“We could all see, as soon as I came here, the quality of the players and how they went about their work day in, day out. I always believed the positives would turn around, The manager is always telling us that performances are really good and they are what are going to get us success in the long run.

“We felt we could trust him really well and that would bring us good results.”
