Charlie Lakin believes Rovers lacked only the finishing touch as their winning run was ended with defeat at Sutton United.
Rovers played some excellent football during the first half in particular at the VBS Community Stadium but ultimately left empty handed following goals from Coby Rowe and David Ajiboye.
Lakin on how the game played out:
“We knew what they were going to throw at us and I felt we dealt with that in the first half. We had some great opportunities in the first half and we could have had two or three goals. I felt like we played more in their half, which we want to do, and we played some good football.
“We caught them out a few times but it just wasn’t our day to put the ball in the back of the net.
“We have to take the chances. We’re creating them but we need to take them and we know that individually and as a group.
“We have to reflect on it and get ready for next week because it’s another big game against Bradford and hopefully we can take the chances.”
On the message at half time:
“He just said to us to keep doing what we’re doing. We knew what they were going to throw at us in the second half and they did that. He said the football team was going to win it - but it just wasn’t our day.
“We had a great opportunity early in the second half and if that goes in it’s a completely different game.”
On the difficulty of fighting a way back into the game:
“In the past three games we haven’t conceded and we’ve been on top. This was a different scenario and a different situation for us. No one likes going behind and no one likes losing so when you go behind it’s going to rattle you snd frustrate you and make you want to win more, which is what it did.
“The second goal, we’re fighting and trying to push for an equaliser, and we get caught on the counterattack, which happens in games.”
On his own performances for Rovers:
“I’ve loved it. The one thing that I wanted to do was play games and help the team out as much as possible and I feel like I’m trying to do that as much as I can. All the lads are on board and saying that I’m doing well which is always nice to hear.
“The gaffer and the coaching staff are saying the same. I just want to improve in every game, help as much as I can in every game - that’s the plan and I just want to get better.”
