Schofield wants a Rovers squad built around captain Anderson

28 February 2023

Danny Schofield says Tom Anderson is the type of player he wants to build his team around after the captain signed a new contract with Rovers.

Anderson has committed his future to the club until the summer of 2025 and head coach Schofield sees him as a pillar of his squad.

“First and foremost, it’s him as a person, him as our captain and our leader of the team - I think he adds a lot of value in terms of that,” Schofield said.

“Then there are the abilities he has as a football player. I think he adds a lot of value in both defence and attack and has a positive impact, not only in his own performances, but on those around him.

“He is someone we want at the club and someone we wanted to tie down for the next two seasons.

“We want players who want to be at the club, who feel they can progress their careers here, both individually and as a club.

“We want people who will drive the club to where it wants to be, and Tom certainly does that.

“We’ve sat down and spoken a number of times about him going forward and him wanting to be at the club and finally we’ve got a contract sorted that all parties are happy with. It’s good news.”

Schofield admits he has been impressed by the way the 29-year-old has adapted to the style of play he has implemented since his appointment, which asks for more ability on the ball from defenders.

He said: “Fundamentally, Tom Anderson is a sound football player. He’s very physical, good in the aerial duels, good in the tackles and has really good defensive organisation skills.

“But on the ball, we see a lot of qualities and areas that he can continue to improve on, which is important.

“I think he’s a well-rounded player and he adds a lot of value to the squad.

“I think that’s vital.”
