Nelson eager to accelerate his development with Rovers

17 January 2023

Ben Nelson is confident his experiences in the first half of the campaign have primed him for his loan spell at Rovers.

The centre back has arrived at the Eco-Power Stadium on loan from Premier League side Leicester City, having spent the last few months with Rochdale.

Nelson made 12 appearances for Rochdale and is looking to take the next step in his development during his time with Rovers.

“I learned a lot and here I think I’ve got a really got a really good platform to push on and get some games under my belt,” the 18-year-old said.

“Everyone knows the difference in physicality between men’s and U23 football in terms of balls in the air. I had to get used to more aerial duels and I think that’s the main difference.

“There’s different styles of play that you come up against so it’s a great opportunity.

“I enjoyed the battle against more experienced players. You need more know-how and you’re coming up against players that know the little tricks so you have to stay more alert.”

Nelson joined in training with his new team mates for the first time on Tuesday morning and is looking forward to his first taste of match action.

While admitting defensive strength is his priority, Nelson is confident he has the ability to handle the ball in the manner wanted by head coach Danny Schofield.

He said: “I like to defend first but on the ball I like to think that I’m composed. I look to find passes and hopefully I can help the team in that way, building attacks, as well as not conceding goals.

“The manager has gone through what he expects from me. It all seems good.:

Nelson will wear the number 18 shirt during his time with Rovers.
