Schofield impressed by Lakin's hunger

Danny Schofield was impressed by the hunger and determination of Charlie Lakin as he ran the rule over the midfielder prior to him joining Rovers on loan.

Lakin spent the week training with Rovers to be assessed before his loan from Burton Albion until the end of the season was agreed.

Schofield said: “It was good of Burton. They allowed Charlie to come in and get a few days of training.

“We spoke a lot and I think we were weighing each other up quite a lot. We discussed football a lot as well as him training. We were aware of his qualities before be came in but it was good to have him here in person.

“We made the decision and we’re delighted he’s on board.

“First and foremost we look at how he integrates with the squad and the people at the club. He seems like a really good person.

“He wants to really knuckle down and get his career back on track after finding himself out of the team at Burton. This is football and he’s got a good opportunity here to prove he is a good footballer.

“We do a lot of research into the character of the player along with his capabilities. We look at where he can improve, the location where he lives.

“My message is to any player that comes in to enjoy it, work relentlessly hard and buy into what we’re trying to do and hopefully be a success here.”

Lakin has reached the 100 senior appearance mark and Schofield said adding someone with a decent amount of experience was important.

“I think it was something that was important for us as well because not all 22 or 23-year-olds have that much experience,” he said. “I know he’s done really well coming through the Birmingham Academy and being coached in a certain way because we’ve discussed that. He’s really enjoyed his loan spells before.

“You always want a competitive squad. It keeps players on their toes and pushes them to different levels.

“They know their place is not nailed on if they’re not performing and giving maximum effort. It’s healthy competition definitely and I’m sure the new recruits will improve the players that are already in the building.”
