Schofield praises togetherness in 'disappointing' Orient defeat

8 January 2023

Danny Schofield was delighted with the togetherness displayed by his Rovers side in the narrow loss at Sky Bet League Two leaders Leyton Orient.

Rovers were the better side in the first half and defended well for large swathes of the second period. While disappointed with the result, the head coach found positives within the display.

Schofield on how the game played out:

“I thought in the first half there were lots of positives to our performance. I thought we implemented the way we wanted to play the game, caused Leyton Orient problems and created chances but having no shots on target, which was disappointing.

“In the second half, credit to us, they changed it and went man for man and it became more of a man for man game. We had a lot of pressure early in the second half and withstood lots of it but it was disappointing we didn’t manage the game by getting the ball higher up the pitch when we did win it. It was attack after attack, albeit without them creating anything clear cut.

“But to concede the goal from the distance we did in the manner we did was disappointing. I think we could have done things to defend that better. To score from that distance, it shouldn’t happen.”

On the manner of the performance:

“I think overall the effort and the application of the players was outstanding. They fought for each other, which I asked for, they fought for the football club and they wanted to win the game of football.

“Coming away from home to a team that is top of the league is always going to be a challenge. But we stood up to that. Credit to the players in terms of their character and their togetherness, I think that’s the biggest thing I took out of the game.”

On the lack of clear cut chances:

“I think the stats throughout the game were pretty even in terms of shots and shots on goal. It’s an area I knew when coming into the role would probably be a focus that would take more time than anything else.

“We need to address that, we need to create better chances. We need to have more dynamic movements to create better opportunities.”
