McCann encouraging Rovers to show no hesitation with ruthlessness

12 July 2023

Grant McCann admitted feeling frustrated that Rovers were not as ruthless as they might have been during the first half of the friendly win at Boston United.

Rovers netted all three goals in the opening 45 minutes, with Joe Ironside scoring twice and Tommy Rowe adding another in the 3-2 triumph.

McCann felt his side should have scored more and has encouraged them to turn the screw on the opposition when given the opportunity.

“In the first half I couldn’t fault them but the one thing I said to the players was that they need to be more clinical and more ruthless,” he said. “It could have been seven or eight, and that is no exaggeration with the amount of chances we had.

“In the season we need to take those chances. I don’t want to say not feel sorry for people but when you’ve got a team on the run or on the ropes you’ve got to punish them.

“I think people know how I want my teams to play and that is to go for the jugular.

“That was probably my only criticism in the first half.

“In the second half we were a bit young and lacked experience a bit but there were some good moments. The lads put a good shift in.

“It was a really worthwhile performance and a good performance.”
