McCann wants repeat of subs' impact against Port Vale

30 July 2023

Grant McCann insists the whole squad must play their part if Rovers are to achieve their goals this season.

McCann praised the impact of the substitutes in Saturday’s final friendly of the summer against Port Vale on Saturday.

Within seconds of entering play as a triple substitution, George Miller, Deji Sotona and goalscorer George Broadbent combined to net the only goal of the game.

And the Rovers manager says they provided the perfect example of what he will need substitutes to do this season.

“We’re going to need that this season,” McCann said. “It’s a squad game. Whoever starts next week against Harrogate, it’s not going to just be about them.

“It’s going to be about those coming off the bench to hopefully impact the game for us and win us the game.

“I’ve spoken about that before in pre-season friendlies, about the second half teams and what they are going to do to impact things. I think you saw in this one, a massive impact from the subs and that’s going to be really vital for us this season.”

Saturday’s 1-0 triumph brought to an end the official pre-season friendly programme, with only a behind-closed-doors game against opposition from Huddersfield Town to come on Tuesday.

And McCann feels overall that the games to date have been collectively successful.

He said: “I think it’s been good. It’s been successful. We’ve managed to get good minutes into players’ legs. We can top up the ones that need it when we play Huddersfield.

“You’ll see a lot of the subs from Saturday will get some minutes on Tuesday. Hopefully Kyle Hurst, Jon Taylor and Jamie Sterry will play some part too. There’s going to be minutes into legs which will put us in good stead for Saturday.”
