Grant McCann says building the physical tolerance of his players has been a key focus during pre-season.
Looking to avoid a number of injuries in the coming campaign, McCann says the staff have given strong consideration to resilience as they have planned fitness work for the squad this summer.
“We’re building the tolerance of the group,” he said. “We believe there were a lot of injuries last year and we’ve had to be mindful of that so we’ve built them up really nice.
“It’s amazing that Jon Taylor got 60 minutes at Scunthorpe and looked full of energy. Tommy Rowe went down but really wanted to go back on, which shows the enthusiasm of him.
“We’re really pleased. We’ve got a couple of knocks and niggles in the camp and we’re two weeks away from the start of the season so we want to keep it like that with a fully fit squad.
“So far we’ve managed to get two 45 minutes and two 60 minutes into the group and now we can step it up this week. The group should get 90 minutes into them on Tuesday against Sheffield Wednesday, or Middlesbrough behind-closed-doors at the training ground. Both groups will play 90, which is brilliant for us.
“The fitness is good. There is a lot of work in terms of how we want to play to still be done.”
