REPORT | Rovers 1 Port Vale 0

29 July 2023

Rovers closed the programme of pre-season friendlies with a 1-0 win over Port Vale.

A second half goal from George Broadbent was enough to separate the two sides in a competitive encounter at the Eco-Power Stadium in which Rovers went into the ascendency after the break.

The opening quarter of the game was fairly low-key, with both sides struggling to fashion danger in the final third.

The first real chance, on 21 minutes, was an inadvertent one as a Richard Wood clearing header cannoned off the back of Ben Close and almost looped in over Ian Lawlor.

Joe Ironside looked destined to head home a tantalising cross from Luke Molyneux only for Vale’s Dan Jones to race in ahead of him.

Ben Garrity went close with a low strike as Vale looked to capitalise on confusion over an offside call.

The best opportunity of the opening half fell to Rovers. A well-worked short corner routine sent Molyneux racing inside before he smashed a low effort which Tommy Rowe looked to divert home, only for Connor Ripley to acrobatically tip over the bar.

Gavin Massey grazed the sidenetting with a speculative effort from 25 yards while Vale teammate Funso Ojo crashed a shot off the crossbar from distance moments later.

Wood flicked a header straight at Ripley in the early stages of the second half while Molyneux drew a save from the Vale keeper after collecting a flick-on from Ironside.

Molyneux went close with a curling effort before Joseph Olowu miscued his attempt to tap in a Tyler Roberts corner at the back post.

Rovers took the lead on 69 minutes as three substitutes combined mere seconds after entering the pitch. George Miller fed Deji Sotona on the left with the winger playing the ball low into the box. The initial shot from Molyneux was saved before Broadbent fired in.

The lead was almost doubled moments later when Molyneux saw an effort cleared off the line by Nathan Smith.

And Molyneux went close to getting the goal he had been hunting for in added time as he latched onto a loose ball and attempted to lob the keeper, only for Ripley to get across and tip wide.

Rovers: Lawlor, Bailey, Olowu, Wood, Senior (Maxwell 76), Biggins (Ravenhill 84), Close (Nixon 76), Rowe (Broadbent 68), Molyneux, Ironside (Miller 68), Roberts (Sotona 68). Subs not used: Bottomley, Faulkner, Long.
