MATCHDAY LIVE | York City v Rovers

18 July 2023

Welcome to Matchday Live - our new way to follow all the match action involving Rovers.

We will be bringing you text commentary of our matches on these pages, which will allow us to bring you greater detail of what is happening on the pitch with your boys in red and white.

Throughout pre-season we will be trialling this service so bear with us if we encounter some teething problems but we should be ready and firing for the start of the new campaign should we make this a permanent feature of our matchday coverage.

Rovers have a 100 per cent record in pre-season so far following wins at Rossington Main and Boston United. And now we head to the LNER Community Stadium for the first time, to face hosts York City.

Remember to refresh regularly for the latest updates.

York City 1 Doncaster Rovers 0

Goal: Maz Kouhyar (62)

Attendance: 2,515 (660 away)

FT - ALL OVER

And it's a first defeat of pre-season for Rovers.

90' - ADDED TIME

There will be a minimum of five minutes added at the end of the second half.

89' - GOOD CHANCE

York threaten to extend their advantage. Maz Kouhyar got in behind the defence but fired well over the bar on the angle.

87' - YELLOW CARD

Jack Degruchy goes into the book.

78' - CHANCE

Rovers surge forward on the break. Luke Molyneux carried the ball through the York half before sliding in a pass to Tyler Roberts, who fired over the bar on the angle.

72' - OFF THE POST

Michael Duckworth strikes the upright with a powerfully struck free kick from 25 yards as York threaten to double their advantage.

69' - RED CARD

The hosts are down to ten men after a second yellow card for Thierry Latty-Fairweather.

The left back has been punished for persistent fouling.

62' - GOAL YORK

Maz Kouhyar heads home at the far post from a Michael Duckworth corner to put the hosts in front.

61' - GOOD WORK

The original Rovers XI had a much greater grip on the game in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. We'll see if the new XI can build on that.

60' - ALL CHANGE

Last 30 team v York.jpg

Grant McCann has sent an entirely new Rovers XI for the final 30 minutes of the game.

58' - PLENTY OF CHANGES FOR YORK

The hosts are withdrawing pretty much their entire outfield side. Rovers changes are to come shortly.

52' - OFF TARGET

A really good chance for Rovers, who have been much the stronger side in the early stages of this half. Kyle Hurst raced clear down the left and cut into the box before lashing a shot wide across the face of goal.

50' - OVER THE BAR

Deji Sotona wins another free kick after threatening to race away from his man. But it was him who took the set piece and sent the ball over the bar from 20 yards.

46' - BACK UNDERWAY

The hosts get the second half up and running.

HT - THAT'S THE BREAK

And we are goalless at half time at the LNER Community Stadium.

45' - ADDED TIME

There will be a minimum of two minutes added at the end of the first half.

41' - A BIG CHANCE

A really good opportunity for Rovers to take the lead. Kyle Hurst curled in a free kick from the right with Richard Wood rising to plant a header but he sent it just wide.

39' - NO WAY THROUGH

Rovers are having issues finding the gaps to play through here. York's work off the ball has been excellent.

29' - CHANCE

Ben Close clipped in a free kick from inside the centre circle which Joseph Olowu headed towards goal. Tommy Rowe looked to turn the ball past David Stockdale but missed the target - and the offside flag was up.

28' - YELLOW CARD

Another booking for the hosts. Deji Sotona looked set to break clear just inside the York half but was hacked down.

24' - MORE FROM LAWLOR

The Rovers keeper reacts well at his near post. A deep cross came over and was turned on target by Ryan Fallowfield but Lawlor stuck out a hand to keep the strike out.

From the subsequent corner, York went close with a header across goal from Adam Crookes.

18' - GOOD SAVES

York go close to breaking the deadlock. The ball was nicked away from Kyle Hurst midway through the Rovers half and rolled through to the Cedric Main, who raced into the box and struck low only for Ian Lawlor to get down superbly and bat the ball away.

And, moments later, Lawlor came to Rovers' rescue again as he saved well from an angled drive from Thierry Latty-Fairweather.

16' - YELLOW CARD

York's Scott Burgess goes into the book for a late, lunging tackle on Tommy Rowe.

Apologies for the lack of swift reporting of names of the opposition - they're not wearing numbers.

14' - HUGE CHANCE

Rovers could easily be ahead in this game. Ben Close clipped in a free kick from midway through the York half which was headed down by Richard Wood. Joseph Olowu struck a stretching hooked volley but York keeper David Stockdale rushed to block really well. A big opportunity.

12' - ALERTNESS FROM THE KEEPER

And Ian Lawlor needed to be. A zipped ball into the ball kicked up off Richard Wood and threatened to drop in but Lawlor mopped up.

10' - GREAT TACKLE

Jamie Sterry makes a vital sliding challenge on the edge of the box. York took possession in the middle of the park and moved the ball forward quickly, looking to release Finlay Barnes quickly but Sterry snuffed out the danger.

6' - CLOSE

And it's a really good effort from Kyle Hurst. A goal kick was cut out by James Maxwell, who quickly played forward to Hurst. He cut inside and lashed a low effort from 25 yards that had the beating of York keeper David Stockdale but flew narrowly wide.

5' - NOT MUCH SPACE OUT THERE

Neither side has given an inch in the early stages of the game, with very little room to play.

1' - UNDERWAY

George Broadbent takes the kick-off and we are up and running this evening

YOUR TEAM THIS EVENING

Team v York.jpg

We're to expect all change after the hour mark, with Grant McCann switching his XI for the final 30 minutes of the game.

This is the first outing for Deji Sotona since becoming an official Rovers player, while supporters will have to wait for their first sight of Tyler Roberts as he starts the game on the bench.
