McCann excited for left back battle after Senior's arrival

9 June 2023

Grant McCann admits he is looking forward to watching the battle for the starting left back slot at Rovers play out following the arrival of Jack Senior.

The 26-year-old signed a two-year contract with Rovers this week and will go head-to-head with James Maxwell for the berth.

“We want to have competition all through the squad,” McCann said.

“James is a very good player also and Jack is aware of James being here. To have that competition in pre-season all through the group is going to be massive for us.

“The conversation with Jack’s representatives had been going for a while and once we knew this is the club where he wanted to be at - because there were quite a few clubs after him - we were delighted.

“He’ll bring a real determination to win, that’s number one. He just loves winning. He’s got that determination to get forward and put crosses in. He’s excellent defending one-v-one. He’s a really good character and a real leader as well so it’s a great signing for us.”

Senior’s arrival has seen McCann complete his work on the Rovers rearguard, with goalkeeper Ian Lawlor, right back Jamie Sterry and centre half Richard Wood all signed up.

“We have tremendous options in the back four and that’s going to be important for us,” the Rovers manager said. “In any season, you have to have squad depth and we definitely have that in the back line.

“It’s been a good couple of weeks for us and we’re still working on bringing others in. We could be close again on one or two others. It’s been an exciting few weeks of hard work and it’s great that we can add another very good player to the squad.”
